Queen Elizabeth II invoked the famous “Blitz spirit” in a historic address to the people of the British Commonwealth amid the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.

The 93-year-old monarch, who is head of state in fifteen countries in addition to the United Kingdom, including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, said she knew it was “an increasingly challenging time” for many viewers, and one which had already “brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many, and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all.”

Now in the 67th year of her reign, she said the address reminded her of “the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister.”

“We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety,” she recalled.

“Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do.”

The Queen, then still Princess Elizabeth, did indeed undertake her first solo public duties during the Second World War, as well as training as a driver and mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service — making her the only remaining world leader to have seen service, of a kind, in that conflict.

Her speech can be viewed or read in full below:

Aku ngomong karo apa sing dak kenal yaiku wektu sing saya tambah suwe. Wektu gangguan ing urip negara kita: gangguan sing nyebabake kasusahan, sawetara kasulitan finansial kanggo akeh, lan owah-owahan gedhe ing urip saben dinane.

Aku pengin matur nuwun kanggo kabeh wong ing garis ngarep NHS, uga buruh perawatan lan sing nindakake peran penting, sing tanpa tanggung jawab nindakake tugas saben dinane ing njaba omah minangka dhukungan kita kabeh. Aku yakin manawa bangsa bakal melu aku ing njamin yen apa sing sampeyan lakoni dihargai lan saben jam kerja keras, kita bakal bisa bali maneh.

Aku uga pengin matur nuwun kanggo sampeyan sing tetep ing omah, saéngga mbantu nglindhungi rawan sing luka lan nyusahake kulawarga akeh rasa lara sing wis dirasakake dening wong-wong sing wis padha tresnani. Sama-sama kita nangani penyakit iki, lan aku pengin menehi jaminan yen kita tetep bersatu lan mutusake, mula kita bakal ngatasi.

Muga-muga wae taun-taun mbesuk saben wong bakal bisa gumunggung kepiye nanggepi tantangan iki. Lan sing bakal ngrampungake kita bakal ujar Britons saka generasi iki kaya kuwat. Yen ana sifat-sifat disiplin dhiri, keputusane tanggung jawab sing apik lan rasa rumangsa seneng karo negara. Bangga karo awake dhewe dudu bagean saka jaman biyen, iki nemtokake saiki lan masa depan kita.

Wayahe nalika Inggris wis teka kanggo applaud care lan care penting bakal eling minangka ekspresi semangat nasional kita; lan simbol bakal dadi pelangi sing digambar dening bocah-bocah.

Ing saindhenging Persemakmuran lan ing saindenging jagad, kita wis nyumurupi crita sing nduwe anget ing ati kanggo mbantu wong liya, yaiku kanthi ngirim bungkusan panganan lan obat, mriksa tanggi, utawa ngowahi bisnis kanggo mbantu bantuan.

Nanging, yen ora bisa nggawe awake dhewe bakal angel, akeh wong sing duwe iman kabeh, lan ora ana sing nemokake manawa menehi kesempatan kanggo alon-alon, ngaso lan nggambarake, ndedonga utawa semedi.

Iki ngelingake aku babagan siaran pertama sing digawe, ing taun 1940, dibantu saka mbakyuku. Kita, minangka bocah-bocah, ujar saka kene ing Windsor menyang bocah-bocah sing wis diungsi saka omah lan dikirimake supaya aman. Dina iki, sapisan maneh, bakal ngrasakake rasa pemisahan sing pisah saka wong sing dikasihi. Nanging saiki, kaya saiki, kita ngerti, manawa pancen bener.

While we have faced challenges before, this one is different. This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal. We will succeed – and that success will belong to every one of us.

Kita kudu nglipur yen kita isih kudu tahan maneh, dina-dina sing luwih apik bakal bali: kita bakal melu kanca maneh; kita bakal karo kulawarga maneh; kita bakal ketemu maneh.

Nanging saiki, kirim salam panuwun lan kiriman sing paling anget kanggo sampeyan kabeh.
